Patient of the Month: Oliver

September 2022

After returning home from what they described as a COVID-19 quarantine trip to the Florida Keys in 2020, Trisha and Brian began to notice their oldest son Oliver was wheezing. His parents thought the respiratory symptoms might be a result of the COVID-19 virus, but they had doubts since they were isolated as a family unit. As any parents would, they took their son to seek medical attention at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. As soon as they arrived, the medical team in the emergency department quickly began running tests on Oliver to find out what was wrong.

Once his blood tests came back, the family was transferred to the ICU where they received the shocking news that their son had leukemia. Refusing to take pity from anyone, Trisha, Brian, Oliver and his younger brother Peter decided to tackle this diagnosis head on and with full of positivity. Fast forward a couple years and Oliver is now completely cancer free – enjoying school and doing the things kids love to do. Oliver was so inspired by the support he received during treatment that he decided to do the same to other children with cancer around the United States through his own organization, Oliver Patch Project.
