Patient of the Month: A'mya

August 2025

As A’mya grew, the curvature of her legs grew more pronounced, causing pain and hindering her from everyday activities. Desperate for answers, A’mya’s family sought treatment at Nicklaus Children’s where she was diagnosed with Blount’s Disease, commonly known as bowlegs.

The condition affects the growth plates around the knees and causes a bow-legged appearance. Beyond the physical appearance, Blount’s Disease causes mobility issues and nerve damage if left untreated. Due to the severity of the curvature in her legs, it became increasingly difficult for A’mya to engage in her favorite activities of dancing and swimming.

Thanks to the specialty care led by Dr. Avi Baitner, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon in Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedic, Sports Medicine & Spine Institute, A’mya underwent invasive surgeries to aid in the straightening of her legs along with intensive physical therapy to regain strength and movement. Today, she is hopeful for the next chapter in her life, where she will stand tall as she takes center stage.
