After being turned away from a number of other hospitals, in desperation Wildaline’s caregivers brought her to Nicklaus Children’s for emergency care. Our team quickly noticed that a fast-growing benign tumor on her face was impeding her speech and about to cut her airwaves. She had just days to live.
A multidisciplinary team of doctors and specialists moved swiftly to devise a plan and perform life-saving surgery so Wildaline could survive. She spent some time recovering in our 309-bed tower, and then went home to continue her recovery. Today she is back at school, making friends, singing and dancing, thanks to the quality care she received at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
About 70% of Nicklaus Children’s patient families are covered by Medicaid. This and other government programs are an important safety-net, but philanthropic support can do so much more to ensure every sick kid gets care.
At Nicklaus Children’s, we serve half a million patients every year – and we will be there to help more Wildaline’s so they get the care they need for a healthy future.
