Patient of the Month: Maya

November 2015

Maya began experiencing seizures at a very young age, from when she was 5 months old. For seven years, Maya visited the Nicklaus Children's Hospital Brain Institute where doctors tried several treatment plans with medication to get her seizures under control. When the seizures proved to be resistant to medication, Maya's doctor, Dr. Michael Duchowny believed that performing a Stereo EEG test on her might help them pinpoint the source of the seizures and hopefully stop them for good. The test was not only successful, Maya was also the first patient at Nicklaus Children’s to have this test done. Since undergoing surgery to remove the parts of the brain where the seizures were starting, Maya is finally seizure-free and making progress developmentally as well as in school.
