Patient of the Month: Layla

Published on: 01/02/2019

After noticing that her 1-year-old daughter Layla's head leaned towards one side, Diamond suspected there was something wrong and looked for help. Following multiple medical opinions and failed attempts at bracing and casting to correct the curvature of her daughter’s spine, Diamond turned to Stephen George M.D., Pediatric Spinal Surgeon at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, for a solution.

Layla, now 6, was diagnosed with a rare condition known as infantile idiopathic scoliosis or early onset scoliosis, just a year after birth. Growing up with her condition, Layla was unable to enjoy the simple pleasures such as going to a water park with her sister, dancing ballet, and swimming. Following a period of gravity halo traction, Layla underwent surgery to insert magnetically controlled growing rods to properly align her spine.

Today, Layla attends routine checkups with Dr. George every other month to adjust her rods without the need of an invasive procedure as she continues her road to recovery.
