Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Doctor Donates Sculpture in Honor of Patients

Published on: 10/04/2017

Doctors at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital do more than just save lives. One doctor in particular has combined his two passions in order to create inspiring art. Dr. Santiago Medina is the co-director of Neuroradiology and Brain Imaging at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, but when he is not mapping the brains of young patients, he is using his medical expertise as inspiration to create stainless steel sculptures.

One such sculpture was recently donated by Dr. Medina as a tribute to the hospital and its patients. Titled “Peace,” the sculpture was designed to reflect light with the infinity symbol in mind, and part of Dr. Medina’s vision is that the sculpture will be artistically lit for special occasions, including holidays, events and in honor of the days of awareness for different diseases.

The sculpture is currently on temporary display in the Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion Paseo, but will move to a permanent location outside of the hospital’s new Cancer & Blood Disorders Center building in 2018, when building renovations are completed. In addition to serving as a place of peace and hope for patients, family and staff, Dr. Medina envisions the future sculpture plaza as an area for the community to gather for reflection and fellowship with others during their health journey.

Dr. Medina has many pieces of art that can be seen on permanent display at several other locations, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Tufts University and Washington University. He has also had his work displayed at notable art fairs worldwide, including Art Basel Miami, Houston Art Fair and Arte America.

A very special thank you to Dr. Medina for his generous donation to the hospital and its patients and families, and for sharing his beautiful art with the community.
