Underserved children in areas of Palm Beach County will have the opportunity to see a Nicklaus Children’s Hospital dentist beginning this fall. The Nicklaus Children’s Mobile Dental Unit will be making rounds in the county thanks to a $1 million grant from the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation and The Honda Classic Cares.
The Mobile Dental Unit is a fully equipped 40-foot van that functions as a dental office with two operatory suites as well as state-of-the-art telehealth applications. Staffed with a pediatric dentist, a dental resident and two dental assistants, the team provides screenings, exams, treatments and oral hygiene education, at no charge.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cavities are one of the most common causes of chronic disease in the United States. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than those who do not. Children from low-income families are twice as likely to have cavities compared to those from higher-income households. Thanks tothe Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation and The Honda Classic Cares, we will be giving deserving children healthier smiles.
