World-renowned photographer Anne Geddes and her husband, Kel, stopped by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in October, the day before she was inducted into the Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame at Diamond Ball: An Evening in the Garden. On May 12, Miami Children’s Health Foundation celebrated the annual Diamond Society Appreciation Dinner and Recognition Ceremony, at the Coral Gables Country Club, to thank the generous donors who support our mission on behalf of the children and families who depend on Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The private dinner brought together prominent community leaders, philanthropists, and media executives who have pledged their support and celebrated the Foundation’s success in raising an unprecedented $71.5 million in 2015.

VACC Camp Celebrates 30th Anniversary

This has been a big year for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s VACC Camp (Ventilation Assisted Children’s Center Camp) as it celebrated its 30th anniversary in March. Since the program was founded in 1986, more than 180 families, some of whom have traveled from other places, have benefited from this unique experience. VACC Camp has provided children with tracheostomies (requiring oxygen and ventilators to breathe), along with their families, a week filled with activities such as swimming, boating and bowling regardless of their medical limitations.

The Haitian-Canadian professional boxer and former WBC Heavyweight champion had the opportunity to tour the hospital’s high tech facilities and spend time with patients at the Neurology Department.

In 1948, Gladys Stewart came to the United States from Cuba with the hopes of a new life. Throughout her life, she always felt strongly about giving back and supporting the children of our community, particularly those less fortunate. After her husband Frederick passed away, she visited what was then Miami Children’s Hospital. She was so moved by the compassionate care given to underserved children in need of medical help that she decided to leave a legacy so that other children could also be helped for years to come.

Her life came to a screeching halt after she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Her parents searched for the best doctors and so Raquel became a patient at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
